The top 10 ways to stop snoring
These could range from lifestyle changes like weight management and changing sleeping positions, to medical interventions such as nasal devices, CPAP machines, or surgery, depending on the severity and cause of the snoring. If snoring is a concern, this week could be a great time to seek advice from a healthcare provider.
1. CPAP Machine
A Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine is a primary treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, where it provides a steady flow of air through a mask worn during sleep. This airflow keeps the airways open and prevents the pauses in breathing that characterize sleep apnea, which often results in snoring. Regular use of a CPAP machine can significantly reduce snoring and improve sleep quality.
2. Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs)
These devices are a type of dental appliance that fit in the mouth during sleep. By slightly advancing the lower jaw (mandible), MADs increase the size of the airway, which reduces air resistance that can cause snoring. They are commonly used for those who snore due to a retracted jaw and are often custom-made to fit by a dental specialist.
3. Tongue Stabilizing Devices (TSDs)
Tongue stabilising devices work by holding the tongue forward and out of the mouth using suction, which keeps it from falling back into the throat and blocking the airway during sleep. These devices can be particularly useful for people who snore because their tongue tends to relax and obstruct the airway.
4. Nasal Stripes
Applied to the outside of the nose, these small adhesive strips help to open up the nasal passages by physically pulling the nostrils and sides of the nose apart. This can make breathing easier and can be particularly beneficial for snorers whose snoring originates from their nose, such as those with nasal congestion or a deviated septum.
5. Anti-Snoring Pillows
These pillows are designed to encourage sleepers to rest in positions that can help prevent snoring, such as the side-sleeping position, rather than on the back where snoring is more likely. They may also provide special support for the neck to ensure the throat remains open during sleep.
6. Nasal Dilators
These small devices fit inside the nostrils to help keep them open during sleep. By increasing the diameter of the nostrils, they improve airflow and can reduce the resistance that causes snoring. Nasal dilators are useful for people whose snoring is caused by restricted nasal passages.
7. Smart Nora
This innovative device detects the sounds of snoring using a microphone and responds by gently adjusting the sleeper’s head position with an inflatable insert placed under the pillow. The slight movement stimulates the throat muscles, often stopping the snoring without waking the sleeper.
8. Vestibular Shield
This mouthpiece blocks the flow of air through the mouth, forcing the wearer to breathe through their nose, which can help reduce snoring. It is often used for people who snore due to mouth breathing during sleep.
9. Snore Circle
This electronic device, worn around the ear like an earphone, uses biofeedback technology to detect snoring. Upon detecting snoring sounds, it emits sound and vibrations to prompt the throat muscles to tighten, thereby opening the airway and reducing the snoring. This device is one of the more high-tech solutions available that allows for a non-invasive intervention.
10. A good sleep for everyone
Many of these devices require consultation with a healthcare provider to ensure they are appropriate for your specific needs, especially if your snoring is related to sleep apnea or other medical conditions.
